CHICAGO – Illinois Gender Advocates announces the eleventh annual Day of Remembrance honoring transgender victims of violence.
IGA has held previous DOR events in Daley Plaza, as well as various locations on North Halsted Street in Chicago.
In solidarity with the collective community of transgender, transsexual, and other gender-variant individuals across the entire state of Illinois, Illinois Gender Advocates will be sponsoring the 2009 Transgender Day of Remembrance on Saturday, November 14 at 5pm at the New Spirit Church, 542 South Scoville Ave., in Oak Park Illinois.
The Transgender Day of Remembrance raises public awareness of unprovoked attacks against transgendered people, and gives our allies a chance to step forward and stand in solemn vigil, simultaneously celebrating the lives while mourning the untimely and violent deaths of our trans sisters and brothers who might otherwise be forgotten.
Day of Remembrance seeks to remind non-transgender people that we are in fact THEIR sons, daughters, parents, neighbors, friends and lovers.
This annual event is once again co-sponsored by Equality Illinois, and will include participation from other notable Illinois LGBT organizations such as Trans Youth Resource Advocates (TYRA), Howard Brown Health Center, Broadway Youth Center, and the Center on Halsted.
More details to follow as they become available.
